What "Refurbishment" Covers

A refurbishment addresses the condition of the wheel and restores its appearance. Damage is dealt with, the surface is prepared, and the finish is restored - which may mean matching what was there before or changing it.

It is the broader term, and powder coating is one of the ways of finishing a wheel within it. When people say "refurbishment" they usually mean putting right what is wrong with the wheels they have.

What Powder Coating Is Specifically

A finishing method. Dry powder is applied to the prepared wheel and then cured so it forms a hard, even coating, rather than being sprayed on wet as paint.

The result is durable and consistent, which is why it is a popular choice for wheels - they live in the worst environment on the car, taking road salt, brake dust and stone chips all year.

The Practical Difference for You

If the problem is damage - a kerbed rim, a scuffed face, one wheel out of four - what you want is a repair or a refurbishment, and it may or may not end in a powder-coated finish.

If the problem is the finish itself - corrosion creeping under the lacquer, paint lifting and flaking, a set that has simply aged, or you want a different colour - then you are into powder-coating territory, because covering over that sort of problem is exactly what does not work.

Why "Cover It Over" Keeps Failing

A lot of the wheels we see have had something done to them before. A quick repair that addressed the visible mark without dealing with what was underneath will look fine for a season and then start lifting at the edges, because the new finish is only ever as good as what it was applied to.

That is the real argument for a full process over a smart-fix: not that it looks better on day one, but that it is still there in two years.

Which One Should You Ask For

Send photographs when you ring. A wheel that needs one scuff dealing with and a wheel with corrosion under the lacquer look similar in a description and completely different in a picture.

What Neither of Them Fixes

A crack or a buckle. Both are structural, we do not repair either, and no finish put on top of one makes the wheel sound again. That is a wheel specialist or a replacement.

It is worth saying plainly because a beautifully finished wheel that is still buckled is worse than an ugly one you know about.
